Here is where you can stay if you need some place warm to go

Warming centers ready for the first blast of cold air of the new year

As North Texas prepares for the first big blast of cold air this year, shelters across the area are opening to ensure those who are in need stay warm.

The Salvation Army of North Texas will have warming shelters open in Arlington, Dallas, Denton, Fort Worth, Garland and Lewisville.

  • The Salvation Army Arlington 712 W Abram Street, Arlington, TX 76013. (Check-in from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.)
  • The Salvation Army Carr P Collins Center 5302 Harry Hines Boulevard, Dallas, TX 75235. (Check-in starts at 4 p.m.) 
  • The Salvation Army Denton Shelter 1508 E McKinney Street, Denton, TX 76209 (Check-in from 5 p.m. to 7 a.m.)
  • The Salvation Army Mabee Center 1855 E Lancaster Avenue, Fort Worth, TX 76103.
  • The Salvation Army Garland 451 W Avenue D, Garland, TX 75040. (Check-in starting at 5 p.m.)
  • The Salvation Army Lewisville 880 Fox Avenue, Lewisville, TX 75067 (Check-in from 6 p.m. to 7 a.m.)

Several organizations are also mobilizing:

  • The Oak Cliff Corps Community Center is collecting blankets to distribute through their ministry
  • The Plano Corps Community Center will be traveling across the county to distribute sleeping bags, hand warmers, coffee and hot chocolate to individuals experiencing homelessness
  • The Irving Corps Community Center will be traveling across the county to distribute coffee, hot chocolate, warm meals, and warming supplies to individuals experiencing homelessness
  • The McKinney Corps Community Center will be handing out “winter care backpacks” with gloves, hats, blankets, umbrellas, hydration, and snacks, in addition to serving meals to individuals experiencing homelessness

Several cities have also activated warming centers with community partners, they are listed below in alphabetical order:

ARLINGTON WARMING CENTER

The City of Arlington is extending its Homeless Emergency Cold Weather Shelter from Sunday through Friday, Jan. 10. The Arlington Life Shelter, located at 325 West Division Street, will start intake at 2 p.m. and it will end at 5 p.m. Guests should enter through the entrance located on the east side of the building. The phone number is 817-548-9885. Once at capacity, guests will be referred to The Salvation Army of North Texas warming shelter at 712 W. Abram Street.

Arlington Animal Services Shelter will accept pets of homeless individuals as capacity allows. The shelters activate when temperatures reach 39 degrees or less for four or more consecutive hours overnight. Text "ARLCOLD" to 817-241-3544 to sign up for Arlington text alerts about the city's cold weather shelters. 

CLEBURNE WARMING CENTER

The Cleburne Police Department's lobby will provide a temporary place of warmth, a bathroom facility and water, but no overnight sleeping. Those in need can use the red phone inside to request assistance or a ride to the bus station or shelter in Fort Worth.

DALLAS WARMING CENTER

The City of Dallas is activating the warming station at 3701 Grand Avenue at Fair Park Grand Place. Guests can show up on-site starting at 2 p.m. on Sunday, January 5. Official intake hours will be from 3:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 5, 2025, and from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. daily thereafter, until the inclement weather comes to an end. The shelter is large enough to house more than 900 individuals. Shelter guests will receive meals, restroom facilities and safe shelter from the cold. Austin Street Center will oversee the intake, OurCalling will handle day-to-day operations.

DENTON WARMING CENTER

The City of Denton is activating its warming stations throughout the city. Warming stations with restrooms, hand washing, water fountains, and sitting areas are available during periods when the temperature low is expected to fall below 32 degrees. Click here to see a list of warming stations and community service partners providing meals.

ENNIS WARMING CENTER

Ennis CARES will provide a temporary warming station at 206 South Dallas Street in downtown Ennis beginning Sunday, January 5th through Friday, January 10th. The warming station will be open on Sunday from 12 p.m. - 4 p.m. and weekdays 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. Overnight accommodations will be handled on a case-by-case basis. This service is free of charge and open to anyone in need of shelter during the cold weather. For more information, please call Ennis CARES at (972) 695-3524.

FORT WORTH WARMING CENTERS

The City of Fort Worth says regular emergency shelters are prepared to serve individuals on cold nights including Presbyterian Night Shelter at 2400 Cypress St. and Union Gospel Mission at 1321 E. Lancaster Ave. Families with at least one parent and one child can go to The Salvation Army shelter at 1855 E. Lancaster Ave. If needed overflow beds will be available at additional emergency shelter locations. To check to see if cold weather overflow shelters have been activated call 311 and press 9.

During the day adults can find warmth at True Worth Place located at 1513 E. Presidio St. from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

GRAND PRAIRIE WARMING CENTER

The City of Grand Prairie opened its warming center for all Grand Prairie residents at the Public Safety Building located at 1525 Arkansas Lane. The warming center will be available until weather conditions improve. Transportation is not provided and only service animals will be allowed. Water will be provided on-site, residents are allowed to bring their own food.

IRVING WARMING CENTER

The City of Irving says as with the last four years, LifeChange Housing Associates and other partners will provide an Inclement Weather Shelter at Christ Church Irving. The shelter will open this Sunday and stay open as long as the forecasted temperature in Irving is 32 degrees or less. This shelter has a capacity of 85 guests, and while open, we provide a warm, safe place for our friends to sleep, shower, do their laundry, enjoy hot meals, hang out, and get out of the bad weather. For more information text "homeless" to 55498. In addition, anyone can warm up and charge up at an Irving Recreation Center or Library, hours and locations are posted on IrvingHomeless.com's Facebook page.

LEWISVILLE WARMING CENTER

The Lewisville Fire Department wants the public to know they can find comfort from the cold at the Lewisville Public Library at 1197 W. Main Street between 9 a.m. and 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday. The Salvation Army Lewisville (listed above) at 880 Fox Avenue will be open 24/7 starting Sunday through Friday, Jan. 10, unless it's needed longer.

NAVARRO COUNTY WARMING CENTERS

Navarro County residents can find a safe and warm place at the Salvation Army Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. while the social service office is open, or at Corsicana Freedom Life Church from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m. Sunday through Friday. First Baptist Church of Corsicana is also opening its doors from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday. Residents wanting to help are asked to donate food, bottled water and toiletry items to churches and organizations helping the warming centers. Grace Community Church is also collecting heaters and small propane tanks to distribute to those in need.

PARIS WARMING CENTERS

The City of Paris is working with The United Way of Lamar County, The Salvation Army and CitySquare Paris to open warming centers. The Salvation Army will serve dinner at 5 p.m. Sunday at 350 W. Kaufman Street and provide overnight accommodations for up to 32 men and 10 women. CitySquare Paris at 2515 Bonham Street will provide shelter from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with breakfast and lunch provided. Lamar Avenue Church of Christ will provide transportation between the Salvation Army and CitySquare locations. Warming stations will stay open until temperatures improve and additional warming centers will open if needed.

PLANO WARMING CENTER

The Plano Overnight Warming Station is open Monday night. Bus pickup is 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at DART Parker Road Station. The POWS doors close at 10 p.m. No one will be allowed after 10 p.m. unless accompanied by Plano Police Department or Plano Fire-Rescue personnel. For more information, click here.

RICHARDSON WARMING CENTERS

The lobby space of Richardson’s Police Department Administration Building, as well as Richardson Fire Department Stations 3 and 6, will be available as warming centers for those needing shelter from winter weather. The facilities will open Monday, Jan. 6 at 5 p.m. and remain open until it is no longer needed. Service animals will be allowed, but no pets. Each location has receptacles to allow people to charge phones, laptops and other electronic devices. The warming center locations are listed below:

  • RPD Administration Building: 200 N. Greenville Ave., Richardson, TX 75081
  • RFD Station 3: 500 W. Lookout Dr., Richardson, TX 75080
  • RFD Station 6: 3591 Park Vista Rd., Richardson, TX 75082

TERRELL WARMING CENTER

Terrell police want anyone who needs to get in from the cold to come to the Terrell Police Department headquarters at 1100 N. State Highway 34.
