LIVE RADAR: Tornado Watch is in effect for eastern North Texas; Severe weather threat into tonight

A potent storm system brings the threat of severe weather

A TORNADO WATCH is in effect for eastern North Texas until 6 p.m.

Today brings a concern for severe weather across North Texas. A powerful storm system will approach later today, bringing widespread thunderstorms around midday and this afternoon. These storms could be severe with a threat for damaging winds, hail, and the possibility of tornadoes. The timing for these storms in DFW is generally between now into 6 p.m. Stay alert!

The Storm Prediction Center has North Texas in a level 2 and level 3 risk today. Damaging winds, hail, and even a few tornadoes will be possible.

Not everyone will get severe weather, but the possibility is certainly there. Make sure to have an action plan in case a warning is issued.

Heavy rain will accompany these storms. Upwards of 2-4" of rain will be possible for locations along and North of I-20. The drought-stricken soils should be able to handle moderate rainfall amounts before runoff begins in earnest.

The storms will diminish toward evening, but a few spotty showers could redevelop overnight and early Tuesday. Clouds will gradually decrease on Election Day as cooler weather moves in. Highs will remain in the 60s.

Another chance of storms returns later in the week with rain chances going back up on Thursday and Friday.
