Southbound Stemmons Freeway was closed to traffic early Tuesday morning after a fatal crash involving a tow truck.
NBC 5 confirmed deputies with the Dallas County Sheriff's Office said they were called to a crash along Interstate 35E between Harry Hines Boulevard and Regal Row at about 1:30 a.m. where a tow truck struck a red BMW SUV.
Three people in the BMW were injured, two of whom had to be extricated from the vehicle. The condition of the occupants is not yet known.
The tow truck, which left the roadway after the collision, ended up in an adjacent creek bed. The driver of the tow truck was hospitalized in an unknown condition.
The Dallas County Medical Examiner's Office confirmed one of the patients died at the hospital, though it's not yet clear which vehicle the person was in.
Several southbound lanes of Stemmons were closed for several hours while the crash was investigated, but all lanes reopened to traffic by 6 a.m.
The cause of the crash has not yet been confirmed.
