Former Cowboys’ fullback and current Fox analyst Daryl “Moose” Johnston, who’s in town to help broadcast the AT&T Cotton Bowl, said this week that he was surprised by the Cowboys’ slide in 2011--that, to use his words, he “didn’t think it was going to come down to a last game, winner-take-all scenario with the Giants”--but he’s also surprised by the level of panic in Dallas following that slide.
Johnston suggested in a conference call on Wednesday that head coach (and Johnston’s former teammate) Jason Garrett will need more time to implement his system and grow as an NFL head coach--that fans should exercise patience with Garrett, who, Johnston reminds us, just last week finished his first full season as a head coach and didn’t really have an offseason to properly prepare for 2011.
"I think a lot of people have to understand that Jason Garrett has been on the job for a little over a year," Johnston said, per the Dallas Morning News. "He's never had an offseason with his group to really start to get his message across. They've really had to learn on the fly.
"I see all the panic from Dallas fans and really can't understand it. We're still early on in this transition phase as we move into this Jason Garrett Era."
