Cowboys Draft Baylor Basketball Standout Rico Gathers

The question before the draft was “is Rico Gathers serious?” Now the question is “are the Cowboys serious about Rico Gathers?”

They apparently are after selecting the Baylor basketball standout in the 6th round (217th overall) of the NFL Draft. Yes, the NFL Draft.

Size isn’t an issue with Gathers at 6’7 and 276 pounds. Learning the tight end position will be the challenge. He toyed with the idea of playing one year of football with the Bears but decided to stick with basketball.  He declared for the NFL draft despite not playing football since the age of 13.

The Cowboys have no shortage of tight ends on the roster so taking a flier on Gathers in the 6th isn’t too much of a gamble.

Kavon Frazier – Strong Safety

Scouts compare the former Central Michigan standout to another Cowboys safety, Barry Church. Has the ability to support against the run game and could compete for a starting spot in the secondary later down the road.

Darius Jackson – Running Back

The Cowboys stayed in the state of Michigan to select Jackson. Original thought of as an undrafted free agent, his pro day numbers may have been the key to landing him on the board (sub-4.4 40-yard dash, 41 inch vertical leap). Has buildup speed and the size to slip through arm tackles.
