T.O. is not the only member of the Dallas Cowboys that was released Wednesday night. After seven seasons, safety Roy Williams is no longer a member of America's Team.
The move should be no surprise to Cowboys fans since there has been heavy speculation that Williams would not be back for the 2009 season.
“Roy has been a wonderful representative of this organization since coming to Dallas,” said Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones. “Unfortunately we have reached a crossroad with his time here in Dallas and the difficult decision was made to allow him to explore other opportunities in the NFL.”
Williams confirmed the team's decision to Newy Scruggs Thursday morning.
Williams was a first-round draft pick in 2002 out of Oklahoma and quickly became one of the most well-known safeties in the league. Williams, who made five straight Pro Bowls, was sidelined much of the 2008 season with a broken arm. In 2006, he signed a four-year contract extension with the team through 2010.
From 2002 to 2007, he started 92 consecutive games for Dallas. He currently has 611 career tackles, 10 forced fumbles and 19 interceptions.
