According to numerous sources, Patrick Crayton has likely suited up as a Dallas Cowboy for the last time. Crayton did not play in Thursday night’s preseason finale, like most of the regulars, and declined to speak to the press afterward. Crayton’s agent, Fred Lyles, convinced that Dallas will shortly part ways with his client, has reportedly asked the team for an immediate release.
“I'm 99 percent sure that was the last time Crayton will enter the stadium as a Cowboy,” Lyles said in a text message after the game, per Clarence Hill of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “It's no reason to prolong the situation. Why not release him now?”
Crayton is set to make $2 million in 2010 as the team’s No. 4 or No. 5 receiver. The addition of Dez Bryant in the first round of April’s draft, and the high esteem in which the team holds its young receivers (Kevin Ogletree, Manny Johnson, Jesse Holley) seems to have made the veteran expendable to the Cowboys--particularly at that price.
The Cowboys’ have a deadline of 5 PM on Saturday to set a 53-man roster, meaning a move could be imminent. Jerry Jones declined to comment on the matter after Thursday's preseason victory.
