Dallas Cowboys safety Darian Thompson (23) waits for the play during a regular season game between the Dallas Cowboys and the Detroit Lions on Nov. 17, 2019 at Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan.

Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy said “knock on wood” Thursday morning when discussing his players’ avoidance of COVID-19 this season.

Apparently, not loudly enough.

Safety Darian Thompson tested positive for the coronavirus and won’t be available Sunday against the New York Giants, a source said Friday. He and defensive tackle Justin Hamilton were both placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list, but it was not immediately disclosed whether Hamilton contracted COVID-19 or is a high-risk close contact.

The Cowboys altered their Friday schedule, holding virtual meetings without any on-field activities. McCarthy said all players were instructed to stay home, as coaches reported to The Star. The team is expected to hold a practice at The Star on Saturday before its flight that afternoon.
