Perry's YouTube Channel Shut Down

Campaign may have used copyrighted songs without permission

Gov. Rick Perry's campaign uses social media to connect with supporters, remind people to vote and take jabs at Bill White.

Well, two out of three ain't bad.

One of Perry's YouTube channels was shut down for copyright infringement.

Late Wednesday night, videos normally found on the "Liberal Bill" YouTube channel were not working. When users tried to click on the videos, a message popped up saying, "This video is no longer available because the YouTube account associated with this video has been terminated due to multiple third-party notifications of copyright infringement."

Mark Miner, the Perry campaign's spokesman, confirmed that the "Liberal Bill" channel on YouTube was flagged and terminated because of copyright infringement.

"Some of the sitcoms didn't like the humor," he said. "They didn't have any problem with the facts in the ads."

The Perry campaign operateswww.liberalbill.com and used to link to the "Liberal Bill" YouTube channel, which contained negative ads and spoof ads against White. Several of the videos used pop music and TV-sitcom theme songs in the background. Many of those songs are protected by copyrights.

Miner declined to answer if the campaign was contacted by YouTube or copyright owners. He did say the ads would be made available for viewing on the campaign's "Liberal Bill" website.

White's campaign said the incident was an example of Perry ignoring the rules.

"It's no surprise that Rick Perry's illegal activity caught up to him" said Katy Bacon,White's campaign spokeswoman. "Perry was hoping to 'Tweeter' his way to victory, but late Wednesday night encountered the biggest "Fail Whale" of them all as his YouTube channel full of false, negative attacks was shut down in the critical days before the election."

Bacon declined to answer if the White campaign alerted YouTube or other copyright owners of the possible violations.
