Former President Donald Trump said he was shot in the ear when a gunman opened fire in an assassination attemptΒ just minutes into a campaign rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday.
Shots rang out as Trump spoke, and he had blood on the side of his head and his ear when he was rushed to a nearby SUV by Secret Service agents. He posted to his Truth Social account that "I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin. Much bleeding took place."
A spectator was killed and two others were seriously injured, local officials said. The gunman, who was posted on the rooftop of a building outside of the rally's secure area, was also killed.
At a press conference Saturday night, officials said the gunman was not in possession of any identification at the time of the shooting, so they are awaiting biometrics confirmation before making his identity public. Multiple sources told NBC News the shooter was an about 20-year-old man from Pennsylvania.
The motive remains unknown.
