A shooting took place at Potomac High School in Maryland on Saturday morning, police said.

The shooter opened fire at a charity football game held on school grounds.

โ€œAn individual lost his life here today. Senseless violence today at a football game. Lost his life. A 5-year-old is in the hospital right now, receiving treatment,โ€ Chief of Police Malik Aziz told reporters.

Christopher Mozee, of District Heights, was the man who died, Prince Georgeโ€™s County police said in an update. He was 33.

The gunfire erupted just after 11 a.m. at a fundraiser for a well-known community member with cancer.

Mozee and the child were both rushed to hospitals. Mozee was pronounced dead. The child has injuries that police described as non-life-threatening.

Police did not say whether Mozee and the child are related.

No information on a suspect or possible motived was immediately released.

โ€œWe expect to apprehend a suspect in pretty short order,โ€ Prince Georgeโ€™s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks said.

She offered her condolences to the family of the man who died, calling it a โ€œreally sad and tragic day for our community,โ€ especially on Fatherโ€™s Day weekend.

Event organizers said in a statement: โ€œNo matter what we do, no matter the reason why we come out, even with kids, the knuckleheads always come out to cause trouble. I donโ€™t know what else we can do other than to have armed police officers at these type of events.โ€

News4 asked at a press conference if there was a police officer at the event. There was a security guard but not an officer because the event wasn't school-sponsored.
