Webster, Texas, Donates $3.5 Million to Restore NASA Mission Control Room

A Texas city located near Johnson Space Center is contributing $3.5 million to an effort to restore a historic mission control room at the center.

The Houston Chronicle reports the city council in Webster voted Wednesday to make the donation after hearing pleas from residents, many of whom work or have worked at the space center in Houston.

A spokeswoman for Space Center Houston, a nonprofit museum associated with the Johnson Space Center, said they're trying to raise $5 million for the renovation.

Space Center Houston will make the renovated Mission Operation Control Room 2 part of its daily tours. It was in operation for the Apollo missions, when man first reached the moon.

Webster will provide the money through a hotel occupancy tax.
