The superintendent of a major Central Texas public school system has been charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession.
The arrest late Wednesday night of Waco school district Superintendent A. Marcus Nelson came after investigators said he was found in possession of less than 2 ounces of marijuana.
He was booked into the Robertson County Jail in Franklin, about 55 miles southeast of Waco. Jail records show he was held overnight and released on his own recognizance Thursday morning.
A Texas Department of Public Safety spokesman said the trooper smelled marijuana during a routine traffic stop just after 10 p.m. Wednesday on U.S. 190 south of Hearne, Texas.
Waco school board President Pat Atkins said a special meeting has been scheduled for March 19 to address the situation.
