Texas Department of Transportation Treats Roads Ahead of Friday Snow

Texas Department of Transportation spokesman Ryan LaFontaine joins NBC 5 via phone to discuss road preparation ahead of possible winter weather.

Crews with the Texas Department of Transportation began treating roads across the Metroplex Wednesday in anticipation of a chance for snow Friday.

The system could bring the first snowfall of 2017, particularly in areas north of Dallas/Fort Worth.

Val Lopez with TxDOT told NBC 5 that trucks were dispatched before 2 p.m. Wednesday to begin treating bridges and overpasses in the Fort Worth district before rush hour.

Trucks were dispatched in the Dallas district at about 9 p.m. Wednesday, spraying a brine solution on roadways.

The solution is meant to prevent the roads from freezing and allowing any precipitation to turn into ice, according to a TxDOT spokesperson.

"And what we like so much about it is that we can put it down up to a week in advance," said Ryan LaFontaine, of the TxDOT Dallas district. "It will stick on the road, traffic won't push it around, the rain won't wash it off.  [That way] we can cover a lot more ground and we can get to work several days ahead of a winter system."

The latest information from NBC 5's team of Weather Experts forecasts Thursday morning to be mostly cloudy with patchy drizzle possible with a high of 42.
