Texas Sen. Don Huffines, R-Dallas, visited Russia to meet with officials as part of a group led by U.S. Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky. Paul's father, Ron Paul, was a long-time congressman from Texas and a 2012 candidate for the Republican nomination for president.
Sen. Don Huffines said he went to Russia specifically to "look them in the eye and to tell them not to mess with Texas elections.”
In an interview on NBC 5 Today, Huffines said he met with three different Russian governmental committees and departments, with ministers making public and private statements to not meddle in the upcoming Texas elections.
Election security is an issue Huffines said he's focused on as a member of the Senate Committee for Election Security.
“I know millions of Texans are concerned about election security,” Huffines said. “It’s important that they [Russians] hear it from me and they hear it from somebody from Texas. Because I also reminded them how important Texas is on the world scene.”
Invited by Rand Paul, Huffines spent three nights in Moscow, where he met with Russia's deputy foreign minister and the chairman of the foreign relations committee in the Russian legislature's upper house.
