Girl Hit in Face by Shrapnel After Shooting at Fort Worth Home

The incident happened just before 9 p.m. Sunday

A 17-year-old girl was hit in the face by shrapnel after a bullet came through the window of her Fort Worth home, police said.

A 17-year-old girl was hit in the face by shrapnel after a bullet came through the window of her Fort Worth home, police said.

She was sitting in her living room when gunfire came through the front of the home in the 4300 block of Martin Street, police said. Police responded about 9 p.m. and found the girl.

The victim, Karina Hernandez, a senior at O.D. Wyatt High School, was taken to JPS Hospital and released Monday morning.

Her mother, Maria Hernandez, said the family was watching a movie and waiting for chicken enchiladas to heat up in the oven when they heard a loud pop.

"My daughter jumps up and starts screaming, 'Mom!'" Maria Hernandez said. "We saw the blood on the front of her face first and she turns her head and there's blood gushing out the back."

It turned out the wound was superficial.

"I'm really grateful she's OK," the mother said. "It was just a scare and we are going to be able to push through it."

Police do not know who fired the shots and have not made any arrests. It's unclear whether the round was fired intentionally or randomly, police said.

Maria Hernandez, a fast-food restaurant manager, said the family has lived in the same home for more than 20 years and has no enemies.
