Some unwelcome visitors at tourist-popular South Padre Island have left dozens of people -- with stingray wounds.
Reported stingray attacks on South Padre Island are up this month during calm water and warm conditions.
Fire Department Chief Burney Baskett says at least 100 attacks have been reported in the past week, which he says is the highest rate in years. Nobody has been seriously hurt.
Baskett says stingrays tend to get closer to shore when the water is calm.
He suggests that beachgoers shuffle their feet while walking on the shoreline to avoid getting stung by stingrays. Experts say dragging feet will cause vibrations to scare off the creatures.
