State Asks for Opinions on STAAR Test

The State Board of Education holds a meeting where parents can voice their opinions and concerns about the STAAR exam, the state’s standardized test.

Parents will have an opportunity to voice their opinions about Texas' standardized STAAR test this week.

The Texas Education Board will hold two meetings and take public comments on the STAAR exam Tuesday and Wednesday night.

Parents and teachers have voiced concerns about the tests and the high stakes attached to them. One of the most common worries is that teachers have to "teach the test." Another concern is that the exam puts far too much importance on just the one test.

"What we are seeing is the devastating effect that putting so much emphasis on one test, one time, one day out of the year is so detrimental to the students," said Jerry Bonham, a 7th and 8th grade English teacher in the Mesquite ISD. "I know my students. I know what they can do. And I know that one test is not going to tell me all about that student."
