Mesquite Police responded to a call Monday morning about a man with a knife at a Whataburger in Mesquite.

The caller told police the person left the establishment after threatening employees with a knife.

Later the man who had threatened employees called the Whataburger business phone and said he was near Poteet High School, according to a report from Mesquite PD.

Officers said they located the man in the 3300 block of Poteet Drive and observed he was armed with a long gun.

Gunfire was exchanged between police and the man before he fled on foot. No one was injured, according to the report.

The Mesquite Police Tactical Team responded to the 700 block of Southwynd Street, where police believed the man had fled.

There is no longer an active threat in the area and Poteet High School and J.C. Austin Elementary School started at 10 a.m.

Police confirmed that the shooting did not involve the high school and the delay was a precaution.

In a post on X, police asked people to avoid the area Monday morning.
