A shooting outside a fast-food restaurant in Garland prompted emergency responses at several Garland schools Thursday afternoon.

Garland Police said they were called to a shooting on the 3300 block of Broadway Boulevard at about 3 p.m. where officers found a man with an apparent gunshot wound. The man was transported to an area hospital for treatment. His condition is not known.

Police said the man got into a fight with an unidentified man who pulled out a gun and shot him. Police have not yet said what led to the fight.

From Texas Sky Ranger, Garland officers were seen investigating in a taped-off area outside a Sonic drive-in adjacent to South Garland High School, indicating the shooting likely happened in the restaurant's parking lot.

No arrests have been announced and no named suspects have been identified. Police only had a vague description of the gunman who they described as Hispanic, between 17 and 19 years old, with a short haircut. He was wearing a grey sweatshirt and grey sweatpants.

Police did not say whether or not the suspect may have been a student.

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.

SHOOTING PROMPTS EMERGENCY RESPONSE BY GARLAND ISD

The Garland Independent School District issued a statement on Twitter Thursday afternoon saying several campuses were under "Secure" emergency response protocols while the police activity was underway, though they did not name all of the campuses.

"Parents, please be advised that several of our GISD campuses are currently on Secure due to police activity in the surrounding areas. All students and staff are safe. Please anticipate delays during dismissal. Thank you for your cooperation," the district said.

According to the district's website, "Secure occurs when a threat or hazard is outside of the school building. Students will remain or return inside the building. Staff will help recover and account for students and colleagues outside the building. Adults will then lock outside doors, increase their situational awareness and do business as usual."

At 4:35 p.m., Garland ISD said all campuses except for South Garland High School have been lifted from "Secure."

Just after 5 p.m., the district tweeted the "Secure" response had been lifted and that all students and staff were safe during the disruption.
