Police: Street Racer Collides Into Car, Killing 9-Year-Old Girl

A 9-year-old girl is dead after a crash in Pleasant Grove Friday night.

According to Dallas police, at 7:36 p.m., officers responded to a crash in the 10700 block of Lake June Road.

When they arrived, investigators determined an orange Dodge Challenger, a gray Dodge Charger and a blue Ford Mustang were street racing eastbound down Lake June Road.

During the race, a fourth vehicle, a black Chevy Impala was attempting to make a left turn westbound off Lake June Road when the Dodge Challenger collided into the back, passenger side of the Chevy Impala.

The Chevy spun out, ejecting the girl, who was sitting in the back seat. Another front passenger was transported in critical condition and one other juvenile sitting in a car seat in the back seat was transported to the hospital, also in critical condition.

The 9-year-old, identified by family members as Olivia Mendez, was pronounced dead at the hospital.

"She was a good kid," said Saul Hernandez, a relative who said he helped raise the girl. "Had her whole life ahead of her."

Relatives said Mendez was a fifth grader at Henry B. Gonzalez Elementary School. She had just graduated Friday.

"She was planning on doing big things," Hernandez said. "Now she can't do that."

Video recorded by a man in the moments leading up to the crash showed cars driving at a high rate of speed, before the Challenger slammed into the Impala. The driver of that car was treated at a hospital and taken into custody for questioning. The other drivers kept going, but were later found by police, and were also questioned.

Hernandez and other neighbors said vehicles frequently travel well above the posted speed limit of 40 mph.

"It's stupid," he said. "What do you get out of it? Happens every day over here. This ain't the first time or the last time. You got innocent people dying over here."

This investigation is ongoing. Dallas police said charges are pending.
