“After more than a decade of negotiations, we received a notice from a landlord to terminate our occupancy, forcing us to close the Neiman Marcus Downtown Dallas location effective March 31, 2025. This location has been a beloved institution in the community for more than a century, and we are disappointed to be losing a piece of Neiman Marcus history.”

The company added that some employees may be able to relocate to other stores or receive separation packages. They also said the store at Dallas's NorthPark Center will undergo a $100 million renovation.

“First Luka and the Mavs and now Neiman’s,” laughed shopper Veronica Bernal.

The story of Neiman Marcus is entwined with the story of Dallas. Visionary Stanley Marcus is credited with bringing culture to the city. The Stanley Marcus collection is housed at SMU’s DeGolyer Library. It contains a treasure trove of photographs capturing the history of the luxury retailer and the city it helped shape.

The University of North Texas exhibit 'Delight: Selections from the Texas Fashion Collection' shows fashion isn't all runways and models, it's every day for everyone.

Brenda Gomez stopped by the flagship store Tuesday.

“When we saw the news, we decided to step out and come to downtown, have lunch and just walk around the store and say our goodbyes,” said Gomez.

Gomez runs her own modeling agency but credited Neiman Marcus for helping develop her eye for fashion.

“A lot of young kids studying fashion in Texas and here in Dallas, particularly, this was a rite of passage,” Gomez said. “This was your first internship. Your first step into high fashion and it was here in Dallas. It wasn’t in New York or Chicago. It was something that was here and unique to Texas.”

For those who found a calling here or just loved to window shop, it’s hard to believe a Downtown Neiman Marcus helped define will no longer call it home.

“It’s a loss that’s going to be felt – a historic loss,” said Bernal.

NBC 5 reached out to the city of Dallas for a reaction. In a statement, Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson said:

“I do not comment on individual business decisions. But I will say that Neiman Marcus had a remarkable run downtown, and the iconic brand will always remain a Dallas original. The Dallas economy is extraordinarily strong, diverse, and innovative. While this is in some ways the end of an era, change such as this can open up other exciting possibilities for downtown.”
