Middle School Jazz Band Wins National Title

McMath Middle School Jazz Band earns prestigious award

McMath Middle School’s Tiger Jazz Band in Denton was named the national champions from the 2012 Mark of Excellence National Jazz Honors Project.

The McMath Middle School Jazz Band in Denton has played its way to a national championship title.

The Tiger jazz band won the 2012 national championship for middle school jazz ensemble. The prestigious honor is given by the National Foundation for Music Educators.

"The first thing I did was just go, 'Ah!' I just yelled and screamed. And I said, 'Look that's us!" said Travis Harris, McMath Middle School band director.

Middle school jazz members such as Peyton Dunworth said the accomplishment fills him with pride.

"You want to stand tall. It's the best feeling I've ever had," Dunworth said. "I play baseball and have won the championship three times, but it is nothing compared to this.

The jazz band is made up of 20 students. Each one has a unique sound and ability. As school districts across the state faced budget cuts, so did jazz programs like the one at McMath. The determination of Harris helped the music play on.

"I got really excited when Mr. Harris said jazz band tryouts were coming soon," band member David Steward said.
