Thousands of people gathered Monday at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery for a special Memorial Day ceremony.
The ceremony was organized by the Department of Veterans Affair and the Texas National Cemetery Foundation.
"Being in a national cemetery we get to do this every day, honor our heroes, but this one day set aside every year so everybody can join us to actually honor our heroes," said Cemetery Director Larry Williams.
This year, Lt. Gen. Sean B. MacFarland, Commanding General, III Corps and Fort Hood, gave the keynote address.
The ceremony's music was provided by the U.S. Army 1st Cavalry Division Band from Fort Hood and the Calvary Baptist Church Ensemble. There was also a wreath placement and flyover.
"You got to remember they died for our freedom," Williams said. "It is very important for us to memorialize them, because a country that forgets their heroes will soon not be a country. It is just something that's true to my heart that we have to honor them."
Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery opened in 2000 on Mountain Creek Parkway in Dallas. There are 46,000 American heroes buried there.
