Police responded to the Cliffs of Eldorado apartments in the 1300 block of Eldorado Parkway just after 8 p.m., where they said a man was holding a woman and child against their will in a white Dodge van.

When officers attempted to take the man into custody, a struggle ensued. McKinney police officer Sabrina Boston said the man pulled out a handgun and shot at officers. The officers returned fire, striking the man several times.

“It happened very quickly," Boston said.

No officers were injured in the exchange. The woman and child were also unharmed.

Neighbors reported hearing eight to 10 gunshots.

"I heard a little girl, who was 4 or 5 years old, and she started screaming like bloody murder," neighbor Alec Navarette said. "It was only a second or two and then I heard shots."

Further information, including the man's identity, has not been released.

The Texas Rangers will investigate the shooting.
