NBC Universal, Inc.

McKinney Police say an officer shot a man after a crash Tuesday evening near Amscott and Elm streets. Witnesses reported seeing a man lying on the ground after hearing the gunshots.

A man who led McKinney police on a foot chase after a car crash Tuesday was shot when they say he turned toward officers while holding a gun.

McKinney police said witnesses told them a driver was involved in a single-vehicle crash along the 1400 block of Amscott Street at about 5:30 p.m. and that after the crash, he got out of his car and began waving a gun in the air.

Witnesses said the man left the scene but returned a short time later and began removing items from the car. McKinney police said when officers arrived, the man ignored their commands and ran toward a neighborhood on the 600 block of East Graham Street.

While running after the man, police said an officer used a stun gun to try to stop him but that it didn't work. That’s when police said the man turned toward the officers while holding a gun. They said a single officer fired, hitting the man in the abdomen.

“I just heard the cop tell him to stop, or whatever, and they and I heard the Taser, and when they made it around the corner, I just heard the four gunshots, and that was it,” said witness Juan Roman.

The man, identified by police as 21-year-old Malik Riley, was taken to a hospital for treatment. His current condition is not known.

According to police, there’s an extradition warrant for Riley's arrest in Colorado on weapons charges. It's not immediately clear what charges he may face in McKinney.

According to McKinney police, the Texas Department of Public Safety's Texas Rangers are leading the investigation into the shooting. Police ask anyone with information about the incident to contact their Tip Line at 972-547-3480 or email CrimeTipLine@mckinneytexas.org.
