Police say a driver in Dallas struck a bicyclist and then drove a half-mile with the man lodged in the windshield before dumping him in an alley and driving away.
Nineteen-year-old Silverio Alaniz is charged with causing an accident involving death and was being held Thursday at the Dallas County jail on a $25,000 bond.
Investigators say Alaniz admitted to striking the bicyclist, 54-year-old Jimmie Sines, when they tracked him Wednesday evening to a residence about two miles from the alley.
Sines was later found in the alley and taken to a hospital where he was declared dead. It was not clear how long he was in the alley before being found.
Neighbors cried Thursday as they remembered how Sines, a handyman who lived very close to the accident scene, rode his bicycle everywhere. Friend Misty Winters said Sines was a drifter from West Virginia who settled in Dallas' Pleasant Grove area doing odd jobs eight years ago.
"He was a very beloved character," Winters said. "He had had many adventures in his life, more than most, probably. But all that aside, he was a very God-fearing, animal-loving man."
Sines had several dogs, and Winters said he recently asked her to take care of them if anything ever happened to him.

Neighbor Lilia Herrera said she had given Sines money to buy cigarettes and watched him ride off on his bicycle when she saw helicopters circle overhead.
"He always there," she said. "He always there for me and my family."
Alaniz’s attorney could not be immediately reached.
