It took firefighters hours to contain a large fire that ignited at a recycling plant in Waxahachie Wednesday morning. A nearby charter school district canceled class for the day.
A large fire that started at a Waxahachie recycling plant Wednesday morning and forced a nearby charter school to cancel classes is under control, police say.
Waxahachie police and fire crews responded at about 4:15 a.m. to the scene of a scrap metal recycling facility called Oak Cliff Metal Recycling. The fire is on the western side of Interstate 35E at Butcher Road and will have to burn itself out, according to police.
No injuries were reported.
Life School canceled classes at Life Middle School and Life High School for Wednesday, but said it would reopen Thursday and Friday -- the final two days before vacatoin.
"We will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary. Please follow our social media and website for additional information," Life School Administration said.
Fire crews were in defense mode to try to stop the fire. The yard had dozens of salvaged vehicles with upholstery and other combustible materials. There was no fire hydrant at the location, so the fire department has to bring in water tankers, the fire department officials said. Neighboring fire departments assisted.
