One person is dead and another is injured after an apparent attempted murder-suicide inside a North Texas Wal-Mart Tuesday morning, NBC 5 has confirmed.
The sheriff's department received a call of shots fired at the Kaufman Wal-Mart on the 300 block of Kings Fort Parkway at 9:41 a.m., according to Capt. Ed Black, with the Kaufman Police Department. [[373085681,C]]
Investigators said Tuesday afternoon that witnesses reported seeing 55-year-old Donald Ray Coleman walk into the store earlier that morning and, without provocation, pull out a handgun and shoot 59-year-old John D. Morgan multiple times as he worked in the garden center.
Fred Klingelberger, with the Kaufman County Sheriff's Department, initially said the man then fatally shot himself. Kaufman police later said the gunman survived after shooting himself in the head and was transported by air ambulance to a Dallas hospital in critical condition.
Klingelberger said the men had an ongoing dispute, but further details were not known.
Early Tuesday afternoon, Wal-Mart issued the following statement: "We’re deeply saddened by the tragic situation that occurred in our store today. We’re assisting law enforcement however we can and our thoughts are with the families and our associates at this time."
Soon after receiving reports of the shooting, NBC 5 called the Wal-Mart, which is about 40 miles southeast of Dallas, and heard the following recording: "Thank you for calling Wal-Mart in Kaufman. You’ll need to call back later. We've had to evacuate the building. Thank you."

Nearby Kaufman High School and Norman Junior High School were on lock down during the incident, but those lock downs have since been lifted.
