For six hours Wednesday, the Dallas police shut down the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge in order to keep drivers safe from ice falling from the bridge's pillars and cables.
At about 10 a.m., a driver reported his car was struck by a large chunk of ice that fell from the bridge. The ice dented the car's hood, but the driver was not injured.
The Dallas Police Department blocked access to the bridge, and re-routed traffic to Riverfront Boulevard.
Officers said the falling ice was not in huge sheets, like what had been seen falling from roofs, but rather big chunks coming from the cables high above the roadway.
City workers and police monitored the bridge for safety throughout the afternoon and opened the bridge to traffic just before 4 p.m.
