Hunt County Deputy Not Charged in Scuffle With Pregnant Woman

Grand jury declines to indict deputy but does charge woman

A Hunt County grand jury declined to indict a deputy whose struggle with a pregnant woman was captured on video, but jurors did charge the woman with interference with child custody.

A Hunt County grand jury on Friday declined to indict a deputy whose struggle with a pregnant mother was captured on video and gained national attention.

The woman, Deanna Robinson, claimed the deputy assaulted her in March when he showed up with child welfare workers to remove her 18-month-old son because of allegations of abuse or neglect.

The grand jury declined to indict the deputy for assaulting her and also did not indict her for assaulting the deputy.

Robinson was charged, however, with interference with child custody.

Her attorney said she did not understand the grand jury's thinking.

"It's a little disappointing because the video I saw clearly showed the deputy assaulting a 38-week pregnant woman," said the attorney Carol Gustin. "I guess they considered evidence other than what I saw."

Gustin said Robinson will fight the interference charge.

Hunt County Sheriff Randy Meeks was not available for comment Friday afternoon.
