In an effort to build 50 homes in the next five years, Denton County’s Habitat for Humanity is preparing to build an entire neighborhood in Denton, and looking for a lot of help to do it.
The nonprofit launched the new initiative recently after long only being able to build a house or two each year due to the economy. Now, armed with new leadership and better times, the group says it is ready to really get to work.
To reach that 50-home goal Habitat has started preparing lots in Pilot Point and elsewhere in the county, but the big target is a field in southeast Denton where Habitat plans to build its first neighborhood.
"We hope to be able to build about 32 homes out here, families, maybe a little area with a park for kids to play in, and it's going to be phenomenal. We're really looking forward. It's definitely our most ambitious project yet,” said organization president Christine Thomason.
To help make the neighborhood, and the entire 50 home goal possible, the group has already started extensive fundraising including, they said, major plans for their yearly 5k walk and run at the end of April when several area law enforcement agencies will work with them to help raise funding.
Also helping out will be several of the 92 past Habitat families in the county.
Habitat for Humanity offers interest-free mortgages to families in need and then helps them to build that home with volunteers and hard work by the recipients themselves.
