Grand Jury Indicts Suspect in Slaying of Dallas Police Officer, Dallas DA Seeking Death Penalty

Dallas County District Attorney pursuing the death penalty in officer's slaying

Dallas County District Attorney Faith Johnson says her office will pursue the death penalty in the case against 30-year-old Armando Luis Juarez, the suspect accused of fatally shooting Dallas police officer Rogelio Santander April 24.

Juarez was indicted on five counts by a Dallas County grand jury Tuesday, including capital murder and attempted capital murder.

Police said Santander and fellow officer Crystal Almeida confronted Juarez, who was suspected of shoplifting, inside a Dallas-area Home Depot store.

At some point, Juarez opened fire on the officers and the store's loss prevention officer, Scott Painter, police said.

All three were hospitalized following the shooting. Santander survived the night but died the following morning. He was laid to rest May 1 at Restland Cemetery in Dallas.

Almeida was shot in the face and was only discharged from the hospital Sunday. The 26-year-old was surprised by 50 officers who lined up outside Baylor Medical Center to escort her home on May 20.

Painter, who spent nearly two weeks in recovery, was discharged May 7.

Juarez, who remains in custody on $4 million bond, was also indicted on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon on a public servant.

The AP reached out to Juarez's attorney for comment but has not yet heard back.
