A 13-year-old Fort Worth girl who was attacked on her way to a school bus stop in April received a heart transplant Monday.
Dorika Wimana's heart and lungs were damaged when Fort Worth police say 35-year-old Terry Wayne King attacked and choked her April 19 as she was walking from her house to her bus stop at the corner of Calmont Avenue and Laredo Drive.[[489675341, R]]
Wimana's family said she escaped further injury by struggling against King, who police say was scared off when the bus pulled up.
Wimana was taken to Cook Children's Hospital in Fort Worth after the attack, but moved to Children's Medical Center Dallas in May, said her father Twizere Buhinja.
"She say, 'If I get better, I move from this hospital, I go back to home and I see my family. I see my brothers, I go back to school. I'm going to be happy,'" Buhinja said.
King could face five to 99 years in prison if he is convicted of injury to a child.
