People on the Trinity Trails got a firsthand look at the beginnings of a pedestrian bridge as huge arch beams were hoisted into position.
The $2.5 million Phyllis J. Tilley Memorial Bridge will be the first arch-supported stress ribbon bridge in the United States. The bridge has two 163-foot metal arches.
"It looks like it's just starting to go up now," said Delores Jones who enjoys riding Fort Worth's trails.
The bridge is named after local community advocate Phyllis J. Tilley, who helped found Fort Worth Streams and Valleys Inc., Mayfest and numerous other initiatives that have helped beautify and revitalize the Trinity River.
It is meant to encourage bike and foot traffic along the Trinity River as well as connect downtown with the Trinity Trail System.
The bridge is scheduled to be finished in August.
Money for the bridge has come from many places including the city, the federal government and Fort Worth Streams and Valleys.
