The shooting was reported at about 6:43 p.m. in the southbound lanes of Loop 820 near Trinity Boulevard.

Police said they had received several calls about a traffic hazard in the area, and when officers arrived they said a man in his early 40s — whose identity has not been released — was standing in the middle traffic lanes.

The officers blocked southbound traffic for the man's protection and began speaking with him in an effort to get him out of the road, police said.

It is unknown what the man's intentions were or the circumstances that led him to be standing in the freeway, police said.
