Fire Engulfs Tyler's Historic Downtown Square

Fire destroys several buildings in historic square.

The fire that gutted several historic buildings on Tyler's downtown courthouse square is out.

But the roofs of several of the buildings collapsed before the fire across from the rear of the Smith County Courthouse was extinguished about midnight Tuesday night.

A Tyler police and fire dispatcher said the fire had "completely engulfed" some of the buildings. The Tyler Morning Telegraph reported the blaze had gutted some historic buildings.

Tyler Fire Department Capt. Jeff Akin said one firefighter was taken to a hospital with chest pains but is in good condition. No cause for the 7:15 p.m. fire has been determined.

Tyler is located 91 miles east-southeast of Dallas.
