Triple-digit temperatures caused McKinney firefighters to call in extra help Sunday afternoon after a fire broke out at a home on the 500 block of North Pearson Avenue.
Firefighters said one person was home at the time of the fire, which started in the attached garage at 2:40 p.m., officials said. Nearly two-dozen firefighters responded to the fire and took turns fighting the blaze while others tried to stay cool in the shade.
“The heat is always a big concern, in weather on days like this” said fire department spokeswoman Stacy Durham said. "They go to a rehab center where they re-hydrate, they have cold water, they have Gatorade, they have appropriate snacks and they have towels that are dipped into ice water that they can cool down."
No firefighters were hurt battling the blaze or the heat of the sun.
Firefighters deemed the home to be a total loss and crews took defensive action to keep the flames from spreading.
“My sister-in-law called me and told me that the house was on fire, so by the time we got here it was almost over” says Ilse Molina, who lived in the house with her in-laws
“I hope I can get my stuff out, and I hope I find another house quick”, said Molina.

The fire started in the garage, and a propane tank stored inside it exploded after the fire started.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
