The FBI has taken over the investigation into an explosion near a gas line in Plano.

The FBI and Plano police found suspected explosives inside the home of a man who was severely injured just after midnight when an explosive device detonated in his arms on Monday.

Investigators searched the man's home for hours Monday night and early Tuesday morning. They detonated the material they found in a 4-foot-deep hole in a rural area of Kaufman County.

In a statement, Special Agent in Charge Diego G. Rodriguez said the investigation indicates that there is no current threat to public safety.

The FBI said it is investigating the explosion in conjunction with the FBI-sponsored North Texas Joint Terrorism Task Force and the Plano Police Department.

No one has been arrested in connection with the explosion.

Investigators believe a bomb went off while the man was tampering with a natural gas line. He is so severely injured that he cannot speak.

NBC 5 is not naming the man because authorities have not identified or charged him.

Neighbors said the 33-year-old man lives at the home with his parents and described him as isolated. They said he doesn't have a job and is often seen on his computer or out running.

Police found him injured after a loud boom rocked a neighborhood in the 3600 block of Parker Road.

"We just heard the huge explosion, and we see the guy screaming in pain," resident Alex Russell said. "It's really, really freaky. I don't know. I always regarded Plano as a safe place to live and then this happens. I don't know what to make of it."
