Ex-Officer Pleads No Contest, Ran Over Texas Trooper Wife

A now-former Texas police officer faces up to 10 years in prison for running over his Department of Public Safety trooper wife during an argument.

The Victoria Advocate reports Corey Tolbert on Thursday pleaded no contest to reckless assault causing serious bodily injury.

Tolbert was a Cuero police sergeant. Elizabeth Tolbert was a state trooper. Both resigned following the 2014 incident that left her hospitalized.

Corey Tolbert says he accidentally ran over his wife with a trailer being pulled by a truck. Texas Rangers determined the woman was injured following a night of drinking and working on water wells at their home.

The penalty phase begins Tuesday. Attorneys for Corey Tolbert, who originally was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, seek probation.

The Tolberts remain married.
