He is a retired Dallas County Sheriff’s Office administrative senior sergeant, who brings a wealth of real-world police training and personal street experience to NBC 5 with his direct involvement in a number of high-profile field and leadership assignments during his lengthy law enforcement career.
In 2017 Don received a national Edward R. Murrow Award for his teamwork in covering the 2016 Dallas police officer ambush, is a four-time Lone Star Emmy Award winner, and was recently awarded the prestigious Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in Television Political Journalism as part of the NBC 5 Investigates Team's series Against All Enemies.

Don holds a number of Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) certifications and licenses, including Master Texas Peace Officer, arson investigation, advanced accident investigation, and Lidar and firearms instructor certification.
