Chimpanzee At Dallas Zoo Dies After Becoming Ill During An Exam

The Dallas Zoo is mourning the loss of its beloved chimpanzee resident, Kona.

The 7-year-old died after becoming ill during a diagnostic exam on Friday. The Zoo's veterinary team tried immediately to resuscitate the animal, but were unsuccessful, according to a post on the Dallas Zoo's Facebook page.

Kona was born at the zoo in April 2009 to first-time parents Ramona and KC, and also has a younger brother, Mshindi.

The Dallas Zoo wrote, "Ramona, KC, Mshindi and the other five chimps were allowed time with Kona after his death. All are doing well. We'll keep a close eye on them, but animals are very resilient about loss, so we don't expect any issues."

Kona quickly became a visitor favorite at the zoo because of his outgoing personality, and was also very loved among staff members.
