Dallas Students Use “Aquaponics” To Grow Healthy Food

Students at Trinidad Garza Early College High School are using aquaponics to grow food.

Trinidad Garza Early College High School students let NBC DFW cameras into their aquaponics lab Thursday.

The method of growing healthy food is fueled by fish.

Fish waste from an aquaponics tank combined with water acts as fertilizer for plants.

"The plants will gain the nutrients and that will allow the plants to grow and quicker and at a healthier speed," said 11th grade student Josef Sorrells.

In addition to saving time and space, the students said aquaponics can help address food shortages.

The students are growing collard greens, mustard greens and other vegetables.

The school has offered the program to students for the last four years. It is funded by a grant from the Junior League of Dallas.
