Dallas Police Chief Back at Work After Son's Death

Dallas Police Chief David Brown is back at work after taking time off to mourn the death of his son.

"I think a lot of people are glad to see him back," said Glenn White, president of the Dallas Police Association. "Obviously, he's still going through the grieving process, but now we have leadership back in this department. There is still a tremendous amount of frustration and people that are irate over the motorcycle escort."

Many officers are furious that two deputy chiefs called on-duty motorcycle officers to escort David Brown Jr.'s funeral procession, an honor usually reserved for officers killed in the line of duty or other dignitaries.

Brown Jr. was killed in a shootout on Father's Day. Police said he shot and killed two other men, including Lancaster police officer Craig Shaw.

An autopsy report shows Brown Jr. had PCP in his system at the time of the shooting.

The Dallas Police Association is calling for the resignation of the two deputy chiefs who called for the police escorts.

"I think Chief Brown needs to stay out of this situation," White said. "He doesn't need to be their advocate, nor does he need to their enemy. This situation needs to be dealt with through City Hall."

City Manager Mary Suhm hired an independent investigator to look into the events surround Brown Jr.'s funeral.

The chief will make his first public appearance since his son's death at a breakfast meeting for the North Texas Crime Commission. Brown kept a previously scheduled commitment to speak to the group, but it's not known if he will address the controversy surrounding his son's funeral.

"I'm sure he will talk about it," said Lisa DeMaster, a crisis management expert. "It's been a very tough time for, certainly, his family, for the families affected and for the city in some ways, but I think there's a lot that he can't say because there is still an investigation going on."

Brown is expected to discuss his priorities and leadership style at the meeting Tuesday. He's also expected to address the department's financial situation and how he plans to do more with less.
