An elevator shaft caught fire in an abandoned downtown Dallas high-rise Friday, fire officials say.
Jason Evans, with Dallas Fire-Rescue, said firefighters were called to a high-rise at 1712 Commerce Street at about 10:23 -- a second alarm was called four minutes later.
When firefighters arrived, they reported seeing smoke coming from the roof. As firefighters entered the building, they located the fire in an elevator shaft at ground level.
Firefighters had the fire out within minutes, according to Dallas Fire-Rescue's Jason Evans.
"The entire building was under construction, and the only people inside were a number of construction workers. Thankfully, they were all able to make it out safely prior to our arrival. There were no reported injuries," Evans said.
Investigators said the fire was accidental in nature and began after sparks from hot-work being done on the 20th floor got into the elevator shaft.
"The fire was contained to the shaft, but developed quite a bit of smoke; making the situation look a lot worse than it actually was," Evans said.
