Crowley ISD elementary to reopen Tuesday after police investigation cancels classes

School staff were instructed to report to work as normal on Monday; classes will resume on Tuesday

Parents were caught off guard when Hargrave Elementary in Crowley shut down for the day due to a nearby criminal investigation. While there was no direct threat to the school, law enforcement asked that it remain closed as deputies worked a crime scene on a road adjacent to campus. NBC 5’s Sophia Beausoleil has the latest from Tarrant County.

Students at J.A. Hargrave Elementary School will return to school on Tuesday after the campus was temporarily closed due to a nearby police investigation, according to Crowley Independent School District. The Tarrant County Sheriff's Office they were looking into a shooting incident from overnight.

In a statement released Monday morning, the district asked students to stay home but instructed staff to report to work as normal.

An update from Crowley ISD said local law enforcement asked the school to close so deputies could investigate an overnight incident on N. Crowley Cleburne Road, which runs along the south side of campus.

The Tarrant County Sheriff's Office said in a statement that at around 4:30 a.m., deputies were dispatched to a shooting in the 2600 block of North Crowley Cleburne Road near Hargrave Elementary.

Deputies found a gunshot victim at that location and another at a nearby residence, and according to the Tarrant County Sheriff's Office, a gun was found in the field on the campus of Hargrave Elementary. That prompted the shutdown of the school as authorities searched the area to make sure no other weapons were on the property. They also collected evidence and talked to witnesses.

The sheriff's office said it's not clear what led to the shooting, but both victims are expected to survive.

Neighbors said they saw a massive law enforcement presence and a car parked in the middle of the road.

"I knew it was something bad, because there was a helicopter flying over my house," said Brian Smith, who lives in the area.

Smith said he saw the scene as he was leaving for work around 4:30 a.m.

"I was leaving for work this morning and I just got out of my car a little bit and the police stopped me and were kind of like, 'There's an investigation going on and I needed to step back," said Smith.

The district said the school was not threatened, and the road reopened mid-Monday morning.

Crowley ISD said the scheduled STAAR testing for all third- to fifth-grade students will be postponed until Wednesday.

"The safety of our students and staff is our top priority," the statement read. "We are working closely with local law enforcement and will provide updates as more information becomes available."

The district asked parents to check official Crowley ISD communication channels for updates, but said school will resume Tuesday at Hargrave Elementary.
