Dozens, including children, displaced after East Fort Worth apartment fire

Firefighters say one building, eight units, considered a complete loss

NBC Universal, Inc.

Dozens of neighbors, including children, are suddenly without a home after a fire broke out at an apartment building on Tuesday afternoon in Fort Worth.

Fire crews were called to Quail Ridge Apartments in the 4500 block of Brentwood Stair Road around 1:00 p.m.

The fire went to 2 alarms around 1:15 p.m., according to officials, who had to call in additional resources.

They say it took 44 firefighters and 10 units about 45 minutes to get the fire under control.

Fire officials said eight units of the complex are considered a total loss, displacing 35 people.

Michael Woodard is one of them. He said he was in his apartment on the first floor when a neighbor got his attention.

"He banged on my window and let me know that it was a fire going on and we were able to get out," Woodard said. “I just ran onto my patio and jumped over.”

Firefighters said all neighbors affected have renter's insurance and in the meantime, the Red Cross is helping families.

“My family’s safe, my dogs are safe. That’s all I care about at the moment, is that we’re all alive," Woodard said.

Along with his home, his car was also burned. But he said he's confident there will be some good to come out of the ashes.

“I still believe in God, so I think, you know, this is just a sign from Him that better things are coming because in order for Him to give you something better, He has to tear down what you already have, first," he said.

Texas Sky Ranger flew over the scene where smoke could be seen coming out of the roof of the complex.

There are no reports of any injuries at this time and investigators said they are still trying to figure out the cause of the fire.
