Drivers that use Trinity Boulevard in Fort Worth as part of their daily commute will need to find an alternate route after a portion of the roadway caved in over the weekend.
The Fort Worth Fire Department said Saturday's heavy rainfall washed through an area of Trinity Boulevard under construction between Norwood Drive and Bell Helicopter Boulevard.
The roadway was under construction and had been reduced from four lanes to two as part of a project to build a bridge and raise the road.
Both of the reduced lanes of the roadway are closed for about a block between Norwood Drive and Bell Helicopter Boulevard. Drivers can use Hurst Boulevard as an alternate route.
Representitives for McMahon Construction, who is in charge of the project, said the group was currently in the process of building a new bridge at this location. They had planned to keep the road open and build the new bridge beside it. Workers had started to remove some of the cement structure near the road, but they were surprised by the high water that may have compromised the roadway.
Construction supervisors said they will now remove the damaged section of road and replace it with a temporary road until the new bridge is complete.
The new bridge was supposed to take 18-months to finish. Construction crews were not sure how long this issue will delay it.
