Voters in Arlington not only voted out their longtime mayor, they voted against red light cameras.
By a vote of 60 percent to 40 percent, voters were in favor of prohibiting the cameras within city limits.
The measure was put on the ballot after the city council decided to allow the citizens to decide whether the cameras would stay or go following a signature petition.
Critics have long said the citations issued by the cameras were not conformable while supporters argued they reduced collisions at dozens of intersections in the city.
State legislators are considering a similar measure during the current legislative session. Lawmakers have until the end of the session, June 1, to take action.
It is not yet known when the city's cameras will be removed or deactivated.
