Arlington Police Investigate Deadly Officer-Involved Shooting

A 51-year-old armed woman described by her husband as suicidal was shot and killed by Arlington police Sunday morning.

Arlington police said a man called and reported his wife showed signs of trying to harm herself and that a handgun was missing from his gun case.

Lt. Christopher Cook said that officers arrived at the couple's home on the 700 block of E. Mitchell Street at about 10 a.m. but that she didn't answer the door.

The officers went to the back of the home and saw the woman starting to pull away in her SUV. Cook said when the officers approached her, she pointed a handgun at one officer and both officers opened fire.

The woman, identified by the Tarrant County medical examiner as Shirley Weis, was taken to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Police said it's too soon to know if one or both officers fired the fatal shot.

The officers are on two days of administrative leave, which is standard after an officer-involved shooting.
